There's an interesting clash of snobbery vs. humility when it comes to revealing where you grew up in the Bronx, depending on who you ask and what their circumstances were. When I visit my friends in Florida (AKA Death's Waiting Room), I often meet those who will say they grew up "on the Concourse" or "in Riverdale" or "Pelham Parkway" as well as those who love saying "in the south Bronx" or "in the projects". The fact is that it was all the Bronx, regardless of neighborhood. The families that had the good fortune - both literally and figuratively - to live in Riverdale and those who barely survived in a south Bronx tenament are all in the same neighborhood now. To me, it's not clear whether pride or snobbery has been merited by either group.
