Melmac was made from melamine, a durable and cheap alternative to china or glass for dishes. But once people started using microwaves for cooking, it became a hazard because its harmful chemicals could leach into the food. Back in the 50s, no one knew or cared much about carcinogenics. Many of us learned the hard way. Have a Happy Thanksgiving but don't cook in that melmac bowl!
