Assembly Day in times past

I remember assembly day in elementary school (P.S.106). In the midst of a white shirted/bloused auditorium, we always sang the beautiful secular hymn, "Bless this House," which I found very uplifting. I wonder if this practice is done in today's 'politically correct' era. Does anyone out there recall the weekly assembly period and were any such non-denominational hymns sung?
