Cross Bronx Expressway

I would like to know when the approximately 2-mile section of the Cross Bronx Expressway was being excavated on E.177th St. Between White Plains Road and Castle Hill Ave. sometime in the 1940's during the war. I understand a lot of homes and business had to be razed to make way. Since I wasn't born until 1953, and really never thought to ask my grandparents who lived at 1996 Gleason Ave (corner of Pugsley) at the time.
Anyone out there who would remember?
