I grew up in a working class family in the South Bronx. I never missed any meals, always had decent clothes, went to school, went to doctors and dentists, had enough toys, including Lionel trains. I never considered myself poor, but had no luxury items. I did know and knew of people who were truly poor. They did not have enough of the basics including food and clothing. That was poor back in those days. Today "poor" people on welfare live better than I did. It depends on how you define "poor.
