Talk about Time! It reminds me of the time when I joined the ARNG in 1976,a few years after I served 6 1/2 Years in the US Navy. I had to march that year in the Memorial Day Parade, BTW we also did street detail for the visiting Queen who was here for our Two Hundred year of independence.Anyway, The speakers at the cemetery were WW I vets. What stuck in my mind was when he said" there won't be many of us to sponsor these ceremonies, pretty soon the WW II vets will be taking over".
Now that I reflect on what was said that day, the WW II vets are for the most part unable to attend the festivities, most of them are gone.I decided prior to the Pandemic that I will have a talk at the local HS & remind them to be aware of the few WW II vets that are still around. I said that we have a B-17 waist gunner in our town & an Iwo Jima vet also. I also emphasized to think how far back that is in your lives & that you should make a very special note in your minds that over seventy-five years ago you can tell your grandchildren that you knew of two WW II vets.
