I grew up in apartments my whole life. I never aspired to a house. It was out of my realm. No one I knew had one. I never knew anyone who did. My husband comes from another country, also from apartment living. But, he wanted to live the American dream. So we bought a house. It was so lonely. I kept waiting to see people at the mailboxes or in the elevator. It was very quiet too. No one else's conversations overheard, no one clomping up the stairs or banging the elevator door. I got used to it. And, certainly, there are wonderful things about house living. Not the least of it is the outdoor space. And, now that I am used to it, the privacy. But I do miss apartment living and I would go back to it if the chance arose.
