Youthful Reflection

I was a child of the streets way back early sixties…
Nothing was important ‘cept the chicks and the beer…
School was just a social occasion… little was learned, less was feared.
Songs were be-bop, doo-wop, and cool…
Hangin’ out was everything… being “with it” was the rule.
Girls wore their hair up… socks were high…
Back seat of a Chevy - girl and guy…
Balconies, popcorn, coppin’ a feel…
Wondering now if all that was real.
Memories fade as the years take their toll…
Wish they didn’t… it’s a bitch gettin’ old.
Life takes a strange twist in young adolescence and later teens…
Made up of foolish ambitions… made up of foolish dreams.
Maybe I’ll be a rock star, an actor, a hero type guy…
Too much to think about… little to act on… guess I’ll just continue on by.
‘Cause I’m just an average city fella… play stickball, pool, and the rest.
Back in early sixties life was so simple… never ever put to the test…
Of manhood, fatherhood, lover and such… provider, guider, it was all a bit too much.
Little was known of these responsible ways…
Nothin’ was valued ‘cept carefree days.
Friends were what really mattered ‘till drugs came along…
Change the scene… changed the songs.
Life woke up all around my eyes…
Thankfully not too late to my surprise.
Had to do something to break the mold…

Had to be courageous, daring, bold.
Joined the Air Force… went to Nam… gonna’ do “my bit” for Uncle Sam.
Well here I sit many years gone by…
Still doing my bit, still wondering why…
I wasted those years of dreaming big dreams, of carefree days, adolescence and teens.
But writing this down I breathe a deep sigh… and try to hold back the tear in my eye.
“Cause if I knew then what I know now”… I’d do it all over again anyhow!
Kids are kids, everyone is the same…
Some play it differently… but all play the game.
Life and its wonders… will we ever learn…
That the adult transition requires only somewhat concern.
For the teens of today are the same as we were…
Though sometimes the chicks, beers, occasions are blurred.
And someday they too will reflect and remember back when…
… and then the cycle will start all over again
