The clue: "something else about the spot became quite unusual" could be referring to the "unusual" Kingsbridge Road underpass from where it starts to cross from west to east under the Grand Concourse then continues to turn very sharply south for a full block where it exits to street level at 194th Street and Valentine Avenue, as shown in the photo. I believe that of ALL the Grand Concourse underpasses, the Kingsbridge Road underpass is the only one that is not perfectly straight in its shape from end to end. Could that be what is "unusual"?
