Well, Kevin, I was a crossing guard at P.S. 106 just about the same time as you are talking about. We wore white plastic belts with a sash over one shoulder. One of the kids rose in the ranks and earned a "leutenant's" badge. Our job was to stand at the corner with arms outstretched until the light changed. I was very proud to do this job; I remember coming slightly late to class because of my duty outside, and then plunking my plastic belt and buckle loudly down on the desk to show off.
