I remember the Castle Hill Pool. Across the street was a bus stop with a food stand behind it where you could get french fries and a bike stand. One summer in 1956 I put my brand new English Racer (new since Christmas) in that stand. When I came out, the bike was gone. Stupidly, I didn't have a lock for it. I'm still pissed off about that.

Another time, a few blocks north of the El on Westchester there was a Five and Dime store. Me and a buddy stole two comic books each and started home to Parkchester walking down Castle Hill. At the el there was a newstand with this old guy running it. He was a little guy with an accent. He grabbed me and accused me of stealing the comics from his stand. Holding me, he looked for those same comics but couldn't find them so he let me go with a mumbled curse.

Funny thing was, the same comics were there but he didn't see them. That led me into a life of crime which lasted til school started that fall.
