Hi Sammy,

Echo, Claremont, and Crotona parks were all within walking distance from my house. Echo was the closet, where I spent many summer days riding on the swings, the see-saw and climbing on the huge rock formations.

There were also checker tables where my older brother Herbert played against men that were over twice his age, and he won quite often! He was able to see 2 to 3 moves ahead that his opponent most likely would make and planned how he would respond. His friend Charlie was a very good player and was a long-time New York State checkers champion many years later. They both were veterans of WW2 having joined the army-air force shortly after graduating from William Howard Taft high school in January 1943 (the first graduating class).
