A switchblade has a spring-loaded tang inside the handle that opens with the touch of a button at the base. No wrist action is needed.

A "gravity-knife" usually has a locking pin which, when pushed, frees the blade to swing open and lock into place in the open position. It really uses centrifugal force rather than gravity.

Then there's the butterfly knife, where the blade sits between the split handles that pivot apart to expose the tang.

They were all popular testosterone-boosting accoutrements in the 50s and almost every guy I knew had one or another but never ever used it against another person.
