Hi Miltone, I graduated June 51, and the City College June 55. I am not that crazy about Peter Stuyvesant, who was kind of a mean-spirited sleaze. He objected to a boatload of Jews coming into New Amsterdam, saying that "if we let the Jews in, then next thing is that the Catholics will want to come". If you are interested in the Dutch-English colonial history of New Amsterdam/New York (as I am) , I recommend a hilarious (mostly true) comic-novel, the Judge Hunter by Christopher Buckley in which Peter Stuyvesant plays a role. As you remember, in those years Stuyvesant H.S. had a split session, with freshmen and sophomores going from 1 to 5, while juniors and seniors went from 8 to noon. Since we got out at noon, most of us had a part-time job for the afternoon. During my first year at Stuyvesant H.S. (1948), Stuyvesant Town (across First Ave.) was just being completed. My first personal apartment in Manhattan (when I returned to New York after completing my graduate education) was in 1963 on 14th Street and First Ave., just a couple of blocks away from Stuyvesant H.S. I had a family connection there that goes back much further. My grandmother, with her family emigrated to New York in the late 1800s, to a place known as the Gashouse District, known as the worst slum in NYC. It was later razed to become the site of Stuyvesant Town.
