The IRT subway, later the IND Line was being constructed at the beginning of the 20th Century. Construction of apartment buildings and houses closely followed the lines. This gave the immigrants,(our parents and grandparents), saturated on the Lower East Side and other areas, a chance to move into new housing with fast transportation back to Manhattan.
