I have 2 older brothers that told me about the stone civil war soldier statue they used to see in the Bronx river in the Gun Hill Webster Ave. area. In the late 1950's. They said it gradually just disappeared. I was shocked when a few decades later they dredged the river in that area & found most of it intact, (now on display at Valentine House front lawn on Bainbridge Ave.).
Bill Twomey & John McNamara are the two greatest contemporary Bronx historians we have been blessed with!
