Interesting question. I grew up in Parkchester (1942-1963) where it seemed we were all Irish or Italian. Much later I learned that the biggest ethnic group was Jewish. This surprised me since there were no Jewish kids in our crowd(s). There was a Jewish girl who lived in my building, my age, and she was stunning! We would say hello in the elevator but that was about it. She never hung around with the kids in the building even at a young age. Never occurred to me to ask why. Now I wonder about it. I later assumed it had something to do with the protective nature of the parents as the WW2 horrors became widely known.
