I lived in a three story home on Vyse Avenue near 167 Street during the 50's. We did not have a fireplace. However, there were lamps in the living room that were gaslights from a time when the building apparently did not have electricity. One time I took some pliers and managed to turn the valve and to my surprise gas came through.

On the front of the building there was also what appeared to be a conduit of some type that was a leftover from the original water system into the house.
