Alvin, I'm glad you asked this question because I was actually going to post a similar one.
In my particular case, my friends were very snobbish about what their father's did for a living, and I was very conscious of the fact that my father drove a dump truck and got his clothes and hands dirty. Others would brag that their father was a certified public accountant, or was a jeweler, or had some other office job. When I mentioned that my father was a truck driver, it was met with derision, for the most part. When I complained to my mother about the criticism, she told me to tell them that he was a 'chauffeur.' I guess she thought that sounded classier.
Nevertheless, I never forgot their mocking laughter.
