Alvin, there was lead in all the paint as Latex was not invented yet. The white asbestos casing on the pipes were also in the basements of the apt bldgs. I had to put them on. Noise? When growing up, my apt bldg. was about 60 feet from the Major Deegan. On Summer nights, you could hear the tractor trailers going by with their horns when going thru the tunnel. I lived next to a subway line when first married. In the beginning, the noise was deafening. After a while you got used to it. The subway tracks seemed to be quite close to my windows and you could easily see the people in those cars! The foul smells of the City? You could smell them from Jersey! I remember crossing the bridge from Delaware, halfway up the Pike, you started to smell it, lol! Fishing for Spaldeens, you could smell the gas from the sewer. The water? It was all polluted except our drinking water. The smell of the garbage dump as you went to City Island. Saw it from a small area, growing and growing in size and smell. The bamging of the pipes started at 5 a.m. in my bldg. We started shoveling coal at 5 on orders from the landlord. It took time for the steam to rise, especially going to the fifth floor.
