HEADWATERS OF BRONX RIVER

Does anyone know the northern source of the abundant fresh water for the Bronx River? Looked at a map of the Bronx and followed the Bronx River north and it seems to stop not too far from the Kensico Reservoir. However, it is not directly connected to the reservoir on the surface (at least the map does not show it connected.) Is it connected to the reservoir through an underground aquifer?
