Alvin, as a kid ( late 40s early 50s) I never associated Orchard Beach with the rivers. We use to swim out (Harlem River) of the south Bronx, 132nd St & off of the train yards. There was raw sewage discharged into the river as kids we could smell it when it was discharged directly into the river from the Ruppert'S Brewary. I could never understand how my mom knew I had been swimming in the river, she could probably smell me?

My mom made my older sisters take me to Orchard Beach with their friends which I am sure they enjoyed (sic). I always thought Orchard Beach was pristine compared to swimming in the river. My favorite beach was Rockaway which my mom and dad took us as a family.
