MEDIUM TO LARGE INDUSTRIAL FIRMS IN THE BRONX

My impression looking back to the 1940-1960s era in the Bronx is that there was a widespread retail industry. i.e. A&P, Daitch, shoemaker repair, pharmacy, candy stores, bakeries, restaurants, delicatessen, stationary stores, Alexanders etc, etc. However, there seemed to have been very little medium size to big (heavy industry) firms employing many workers. Maybe it's because I was brought up near Bronx Park and Crotona Park? Is this impression basically true for the other parts of the Bronx? Do you have the same impression?
