John,
I understand how you feel. The Moses legacy is a mixed one. I read and felt some of the emotions from different sides of the construction.
I found an old magazine that reviewed the Eisenhower Plan of Federal Highways. The concept of looping the metropolis was the master plan. I don't know what happened with our fair city. Maybe it was fair game for Mr. Moses.
When I moved into a town in South Bergen County in NJ, - early 80's - at a church function I met a group who was reflecting on the highway development in our area and some of the weird plans that came out of the 50's and 60's. I stated the above, about the loop of the Eisenhower Plan and the Moses Slice of the Bronx and Wash Heights. One of the dudes in attendance was a young engineer in the mid fifties involved in the project. He tried to blow me out of the water about my opinions. He considered Moses brilliant, and a boom to the economy of the city and Bronx.
We certainly differed. My point was the impact on communities and families. It was tough.
