You are showing a Northern European ethno-centric bias. Many Jews of a non-Northern European origin spoke (and speak) Ladino, a sort of Judeo-Spanish, just as Yiddish is a sort of Judeo-German. Their descendents were dispersed to various parts of the world, including the now-defunct Ottoman Empire. There are still (a dwindling number of) Ladino speakers in remote parts of Turkey. There were, until recently, Ladino speakers in parts of Latin American. None would have understood Yiddish
